Some of the key facts of the Trigeminal Neuralgia Market Report:
A study conducted by Majeed et al. (2018) stated that due to the episodic nature of TN, its initial presentation and the long-term management of the patients fall under the care of general practitioners (GPs). A survey of the GPs in the United Kingdom reported the incidence of TN as 26 per 100,000 per year, between 1992–2002. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates the incidence rate of 12 per 100,000 people per year. There is gender variability in the incidence of TN with a female-to-male ratio of 1.74:1 with most of the cases occurring after 50 years.
A study conducted by Manzoni et al. (2005) in Italy stated that trigeminal neuralgia has an incidence ranging from about 4–5 per 100,000 per year up to 20 per 100,000 per year after age 60. The female-to-male ratio is about 3:2.
According to a study by Lambru et al. (2020), the lifetime prevalence of TN is estimated to be 0.16%–0.3%, while the annual incidence is 4–29 per 100 000 person-years. It is more prevalent in women than in men. The incidence increases with age, with a mean age of onset of 53–57 years and a range of 24–93 years in the adult series.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Overview
Trigeminal Neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve, one of the most widely distributed nerves in the head. It is a form of neuropathic pain (pain associated with nerve injury or nerve lesion) and is categorized in two types: primary (idiopathic) and secondary. The typical or “classic” form of the disorder called TN1 causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like facial pain that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to as long as two minutes per episode. These attacks can occur in quick succession, in volleys lasting as long as 2 hours. The “atypical” form of the disorder is characterized by constant aching, burning, and stabbing pain of somewhat lower intensity than Type 1. Both forms of pain may occur in the same person, sometimes at the same time. The intensity of pain can be physically and mentally incapacitating. TN occurs most often in people over age 50, although it can occur at any age, including infancy. The possibility of TN being caused by multiple sclerosis increases when it occurs in young adults. The incidence of new cases is approximately 12 per 100,000 people per year; the disorder is more common in women than in men.
Trigeminal Neuralgia Epidemiology Insights:
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is defined by the International Headache Society as a “unilateral disorder characterized by brief electric shock-like pains, abrupt in onset and termination, and limited to the distribution of one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve.”
As per the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), trigeminal neuralgia affects females slightly more often than males. Although the exact incidence is unknown, approximately 10,000–15,000 new cases occur each year in the United States.
A study conducted by Obermann M (2010) in Germany indicated that the incidence of trigeminal neuralgia is 4.3 per 100,000 persons per year, with a slightly higher incidence for women (5.9 per 100,000) as compared to men (3.4 per 100,000). There is a lack of certainty regarding the etiology and pathophysiology of TN.
